Okayama
Home to Korakuen, one of Japan's three best gardens, and a short ride from the historic canals of Kurashiki.
Okayama is the capital of Okayama Prefecture and the largest city in the Chugoku region after Hiroshima, historically known as the setting for the folk tale of Momotaro, the Peach Boy.
Where to go
Korakuen Garden, ranked among Japan’s three best gardens alongside Kanazawa’s Kenrokuen, sits across from Okayama Castle. The Kibi Plain offers an easy cycling route through the countryside, and the nearby canal town of Kurashiki is a popular half-day side trip.
Good to know
Okayama is a major transportation hub — the Sanyo Shinkansen meets the only rail line connecting to Shikoku here, making it a practical stop between Osaka and Hiroshima or onward to Takamatsu.
