Takamatsu

Shikoku's gateway city — one of Japan's most celebrated gardens and easy access to the art islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa, Japan’s smallest prefecture, and served as a major port until the Seto Ohashi Bridge connected Shikoku to Honshu by rail and road in 1988.

Where to go

Ritsurin Koen, built by the Matsudaira clan during the Edo period, is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens. Takamatsu Castle’s seaside ruins and the flat-topped mountain of Yashima are also worth a visit. Ferries connect the city to the art islands of Naoshima and Teshima, known for their contemporary art installations.

Good to know

Takamatsu Airport and JR Takamatsu Station connect the city to the rest of Shikoku and beyond. Don’t leave without trying Sanuki udon, the city’s signature dish.
