Yokohama

Yokohama grew from a small fishing village into one of Japan’s major cities after its port opened to foreign trade in 1859, and still carries an international character today.

Where to go

Minato Mirai anchors the modern waterfront skyline, while Chinatown, the largest of Japan’s three, is a short walk away. The Yamate and Motomachi districts preserve the city’s history as a foreign-merchant neighborhood, and Sankeien Garden and Yamashita Park offer quieter green space by the water.

Good to know

Yokohama sits less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train, making it an easy day trip or a base of its own for exploring the wider Kanto region.
