How to Choose an eSIM for Japan

Before comparing providers, it helps to answer three questions: how many days you’ll be online, how much data you actually use day to day, and whether you’re traveling with others who’ll share the connection.

Pocket Wi-Fi is a small router you pick up and return at the airport (or by mail), and it can serve several devices at once, which makes it a reasonable choice for groups, families, or travelers with older phones that don’t support eSIM.

Checking device compatibility

Most phones released in the last few years support eSIM, but it’s worth confirming before you buy: your phone needs to be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS and later, and most Pixel and recent Samsung Galaxy models, typically qualify — check your specific model if you’re unsure.

Estimating your data use

Maps, messaging apps, and photo backups are the biggest day-to-day users. If you plan to stream video or work remotely, look for a plan with a higher daily allowance — or genuinely unlimited data — rather than the smallest available tier.

Coverage: which network matters

Japan’s major carriers — docomo, au, and SoftBank — each operate their own 4G/5G networks, and coverage is strong nationwide across all three, including most rural areas. A plan running on one of these networks directly (rather than a reseller with secondary priority) tends to hold a stronger signal in less-covered areas like mountain trails or smaller towns.

Activating before you fly

Activate your eSIM before you fly if the provider supports it — many plans let you install the profile ahead of time and simply turn on data roaming after landing, so you’re online the moment you’re off the plane. If you’re bringing a pocket Wi-Fi device instead, most airport counters offer both pickup and return, so plan a few extra minutes at arrival and departure.
