The Perfect 3-Day Okinawa Itinerary

Okinawa’s three days move outward from Naha and back: day one covers Shuri Castle, the Peace Memorial Park, and Kokusai-dori without leaving the city; day two heads north for the aquarium and a village of relocated Ryukyuan houses; and day three pushes out to sea for the Kerama Islands’ famously clear water before closing with the food and drink that define the island’s table. It’s built as a standalone three-day trip, with a rental car recommended for day two since Okinawa’s only rail line, the Yui Rail monorail, doesn’t reach beyond central Naha.

Day 1: Naha & Shuri Castle

The castle, the memorial park, and the shopping street that make central Naha worth a full day on its own.

  1. Shuri Castle, Naha1

    9:00 AM — Shuri Castle

Start at Shuri Castle, the former royal palace of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom for roughly 450 years. The main hall, destroyed by fire in 2019, is being rebuilt using traditional techniques with reopening targeted for November 23, 2026 — in the meantime, watch the reconstruction itself from the on-site walkway and exhibition hall, and budget an hour to walk the surrounding park grounds and gates that survived intact.

Park grounds: 8:00 AM – 7:30 PM (hours vary by area and season); castle park admission ¥4001-2 Shurikinjocho, Naha 903-0815
  2. Soki soba, Naha2

12:00 PM — Okinawa Soba Lunch

Break for Okinawa soba, made entirely from wheat flour rather than buckwheat — a distinction confirmed by Japan's Fair Trade Commission in 1978 after a two-year dispute. Order it as soki soba, topped with stewed pork ribs, kamaboko fish cake, and pickled ginger, at one of the many shops around Shuri or back toward central Naha.

  3. Cornerstone of Peace, Okinawa Peace Memorial Park3

2:00 PM — Peace Memorial Park

Take a bus or taxi south to Itoman for the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Park, built on the site of some of the fiercest fighting in the final weeks of the 1945 Battle of Okinawa. Walk the Cornerstone of Peace, inscribed with roughly 200,000 names regardless of nationality, then spend an hour in the adjoining museum for fuller context on the battle and its civilian toll.

Park grounds: always open, free; Museum: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM614-1 Mabuni, Itoman 901-0333
  4. Kokusai-dori, Naha4

    6:00 PM — Kokusai-dori Evening Stroll

Close out the day back in central Naha on Kokusai-dori, the 1.6-kilometer strip nicknamed 'Miracle Mile' for its rapid postwar recovery. Browse the souvenir shops and awamori bars, duck into First Makishi Public Market for a look at the fish and produce stalls, and settle in for dinner at one of the many restaurants lining the street.

Day 2: Northern Okinawa Day Trip

A drive up the island for the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium and the relocated Ryukyuan houses of Ryukyu Mura.

  1. Whale shark, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium1

    9:00 AM — Churaumi Aquarium

Rent a car for the roughly two-hour drive north to Motobu and the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, whose Kuroshio Sea tank holds whale sharks and manta rays behind one of the largest single viewing panels in the world. Time your visit around feeding sessions — manta rays around 9:30 a.m., whale sharks at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. — and budget at least two hours for the full aquarium plus a walk through the surrounding Ocean Expo Park.

8:30 AM – 6:30 PM (extended in peak season), last admission 1 hr before close424 Ishikawa, Motobu, Kunigami District, Okinawa 905-0206
  2. Entrance to Ryukyu Mura, Onna2

    1:00 PM — Ryukyu Mura

Head back south to Onna Village for Ryukyu Mura, an open-air park of relocated traditional Ryukyuan houses with daily 20-minute performances of Eisa and other Ryukyu dance on a set schedule. It's an efficient way to see traditional crafts like sanshin-making and bingata dyeing in one stop, especially useful if your dates don't line up with a real Eisa festival elsewhere on the island.

9:30 AM – 5:00 PM, last entry 4:00 PM; ¥2,000 adult admission1130 Yamada, Onna, Kunigami District, Okinawa 904-0416
  3. Rafute (braised pork belly)3

    7:00 PM — Rafute Dinner

Back in Naha for the evening, order rafute — pork belly slow-braised in awamori, soy sauce, and black sugar until meltingly tender, a dish that traces back to the Ryukyu Kingdom's royal court. It's a rich way to close out a day spent mostly outdoors and on the road.

Day 3: Kerama Islands & Local Flavors

A day trip out to some of Japan's clearest water, capped with the drinks and dishes that define Okinawan cooking.

  1. Beach, Kerama Islands1

8:00 AM — Ferry to the Kerama Islands

Take a high-speed ferry from Tomari Port to the Kerama Islands, 40 to 70 minutes depending on the island, for a full day of diving or snorkeling in water clear enough to have its own recognized shade, 'Kerama Blue.' Tokashiki's Aharen Beach is a common base for day-trip operators, with over 250 coral species and a high rate of sea turtle encounters making the crossing well worth the early start.

Ferries from Tomari Port, Naha: Tokashiki ~40 min, Zamami ~50–70 min, Aka ~50 min (high-speed)
  2. Kikunotsuyu awamori2

    6:00 PM — Awamori Tasting

Back in Naha, wind down with awamori, Okinawa's traditional black-koji rice spirit and generally considered the oldest distilled liquor in Japan. Bars around Kokusai-dori often offer flights across different distilleries and ages — look for kusu, aged awamori matured for years in ceramic jars, if you want to taste the difference age makes.

  3. Goya champuru3

7:30 PM — Goya Champuru Dinner

Close out the trip with goya champuru, Okinawa's bitter-melon stir-fry with tofu, egg, and pork — the closest thing the island has to a true home-style dish, and a fitting last meal after three days spent mostly outdoors. If you'd rather end on something more familiar, taco rice, invented in Kin in 1984, is the easier, more approachable alternative on nearly every menu.
