1Canal City Hakata
Opened in 1996 as, at the time, the largest private development in Japanese history, Canal City Hakata is a sprawling shopping and entertainment complex built around a curving artificial canal that runs the length of the building, with fountain shows choreographed to music at set times through the day. Designed by the American architecture firm Jerde Partnership around the idea of a 'city theater,' it packs in around 250 shops, a cinema, a theater, two hotels, and Ramen Stadium, a themed food court gathering several of Kyushu's best-known ramen shops under one roof. It's an easy, air-conditioned counterpoint to the more traditional sights nearby, and a reliable rainy-day fallback.
